The chapel of Vieux Bourg was the centre of the parish until the 1860s. At that time, the dilapidated church could only hold half of the congregation, as the population had grown considerably since the beginning of the century due to the development of coal mining. In addition, the population complained about the old church's remote location and its difficult access on the mountainside. For these reasons, another church was built in the centre of the new village that had developed in the Sornin valley, not far from the mine. The nave of the Romanesque church was demolished and the new church built below.
